Digital Literature and Culture Working Group

Please join us Thursday, January 26th at 6 p.m. for the first "Digital Literature and Culture" meet-up of the semester. Refreshments will be served! Location: FHI PhD Lab CI04, Bay 4, Smith Warehouse. We will use this time to discuss the introduction to Social Media Entertainment: The New Intersection of Hollywood and Silicon Valley (pp. 1-17) by Stuart Cunningham and David Craig. Specifically, we will discuss the authors' terminology, "social media entertainment" (SME), which refers to a new, globalized screen media industry comprising a digital ecology of content creators, platforms, interactive cultural productions, engaged audiences, and more (Cunningham and Craig 2019). What do we think happens when SME intersects with older, more established industries, like the publishing industry, prize administration, and other literary ecosystems, for example? We will also use this meeting as an opportunity to discuss what we would like to gain from this group going forward. Email tanja.grubnic@duke.edu for the reading.
