“Digital Culture and Literature” working group meeting

Please join us Thursday, February 16th at 6:10 p.m. for the next "Digital Culture and Literature" working group meeting of the semester. Refreshments will be served! Location: FHI PhD Lab CI04, Bay 4, Smith Warehouse. We will use this time to discuss "Social Media Users' Views on the Ethics of Social Media Research," Chapter 5 of The SAGE Handbook of Social Media Research Methods (pp. 57-73). Specifically, we will collectively generate discussion around Danah Boyd's prefacing statement, "just because it is accessible doesn't mean using it is ethical." Is it ethical to analyze and close read user comments, posts, or other forms of participation online? What do users themselves think of their data being used in research? What do we lose if we anonymize accounts to protect identities? Do these ethical concerns not apply to creators, who are public figures? What distinguishes a "user" from a "creator," anyway? These are just some of the topics we will take up. Please email tanja.grubnic@duke.edu for the reading.
